The law of life is change.
That is what they say.
And erstwhile still this young,
It seems to be that way.
Put not your trust in princes,
For riches lead astray.
The law of life is change,
That is what I now say.
A good friend never easy,
For that one you must pray.
And one good friend in this life,
Keeps so much pain at bay.
Seek you out that friend then,
Go not alone life’s fray.
But know this life is change,
And we not here to stay.
All things this life mere shadows,
All pain and joy entwined.
All strain and peace made holy,
The future makes Divine.
Thus sing the bards of Heaven,
That sweet angelic tune,
While we on earth thus passing,
Pray it stop passing soon.
For nostalgia ever sweet,
A siren’s song doth wail.
And future joys we hope for,
Pass only through travail.
What then the end of this life,
What purpose for the pain?
If change is all we strive for,
It thus is all in vain.
Perhaps the muse angelic,
Calls forth a greater tale.
A journey through life’s trouble,
Whilst life a holy grail.
The grail though not separate,
From bearing one’s own cross.
So lay your life upon it!
How could that be a loss?
If life be change I’ll take it,
And consecrate it still.
But this dear Lord I pray for,
One helped you up your hill.
